Eileen Anne (Bertie) Gottwald, age 91, passed away on January 19, 2025, after a short illness.

Eileen was born on April 17, 1933, to Joseph and Burnett (Ries) Bertie in Norway, MI. She attended school in Wakefield, MI, and continued her education at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, graduating as a registered nurse.

On June 25, 1955, she married Paul Joseph Gottwald in Wakefield, MI. They moved to Fort Leonard Wood, MO, while Paul served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army. She and Paul raised a family as they moved from Tomahawk to Medford to Park Falls to Marinette and finally back to Park Falls, following Paul’s career with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. She worked as an R.N. and later director of nursing at hospitals in Marinette and Park Falls. She and Paul realized one of their life’s dreams when they built their forever home on the shores of the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, where they enjoyed their retirement years with family and friends. After Paul’s death in 2020, Eileen moved to Weston where she made new friends at Birchwood Highlands, volunteered at Marshfield Medical Center, attended events for her great-grandchildren, and put in many miles walking her dog Bo.

She was very devoted to her Lord and her family. Her creative talents were evident in the quilts, sweaters, baskets, and other gifts she made for those she loved. She was always an active volunteer, helping others wherever she was.

Eileen is survived by her five children: Paul (Jane) of Eau Claire; Mark (Jane) of Duluth, MN; Michael (Jean) of Gordon; Joanne (Bill) Flood of Marathon; and Jennifer (David Sherlock) of Mt. Horeb. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Burnett Hojnacki, her brothers Ray and Bill, her infant son Karl, and her husband Paul.

A memorial mass will be held Thursday, February 6th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Weston. Visitation will start at 9:30 a.m., and lunch will follow the mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to either the Springstead Volunteer Fire Department in Sherman, or the Marshfield Clinic Health System Foundation, designated for the Weston Volunteers.

The family would like to thank the staff of Rennes Health and Rehab Center of Weston and St. Croix
Hospice for the loving care and support they provided during Eileen’s last days.
