Racine’s North Beach Returns for Summer Season Saturday

RACINE, Wis. (WRJN) – Start gathering the beach gear. North Beach will open for the summer season Saturday, May 30, with lifeguards on duty daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., city officials said.

The Racine Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department announced the opening of the 50-acre lakefront park, which features 2,500 feet of shoreline, free admission and parking. Back in operation is the bathhouse, the sand volleyball courts and an ADA-accessible mat extending to the water.

Officials emphasized water safety in the opening statement, urging visitors to swim only in protected areas, follow lifeguard instructions and check daily conditions online. Alcohol is restricted to designated areas, and pets, glass containers and motorized vehicles are prohibited.

The beach opening follows recent lifeguard training that highlighted new rescue technology, including the EMILY device. That’s a remote-controlled flotation unit designed to reach swimmers needing help quickly. The battery-powered device can travel up to about 23 mph and allows a swimmer to hold on while being guided back to shore. Racine has deployed EMILY units at North Beach and Zoo Beach as part of broader safety upgrades.

The city has also expanded its use of SwimSmart warning systems, drones and other tools aimed at improving response times after past drowning incidents.

Separately, a community event will take place from Noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Kids Cove Playground, adjacent to North Beach. The event will feature the unveiling of eight murals, a treasure hunt and a 12:45 p.m. ribbon-cutting ceremony that includes a memorial dedication honoring Bob Oertel.
