There is a hidden gem, tucked into the heart of America’s Dairyland. It’s part museum, part hall of fame, but all heart as it celebrates a deep dairy legacy. It’s known as the National Dairy Shrine. And since June is Dairy Month, it is the perfect time to learn more about a shrine that encompasses almost every facet of the dairy industry from its Executive Director Mike Opperman.

“I’ve been involved with the dairy industry all my life,” Opperman says. “Taking on this role felt like coming home.”

Listen to the full interview about the National Dairy Shrine here:

The National Dairy Shrine is located in Fort Atkinson and is a dedicated space for preserving dairy history. And it may be surprising to know, this is not just meant to highlight Wisconsin, but the world. Founded in the 1940s, it recognizes dairy leaders past and present; plus, it invests in the future of the industry.

The mission stands on these three key pillars: inspiring youth through scholarships, honoring outstanding figures in the dairy world, and maintaining a rich museum of dairy heritage.

Membership numbers are now at more than 20,000 people globally, and the Shrine welcomes visitors from all walks of life.

“Most folks who come through our doors aren’t from a dairy background,” Opperman explains. “They’re surprised by how complex and impressive the dairy industry really is.”

And from vintage milking equipment to a sheep-powered butter churn (“possibly the first robotic butter maker,” Opperman jokes), the museum offers a hands-on look at how milk gets from cow to carton.

The site also serves as the dairy industry’s hall of fame. It showcases portraits and stories of award winners. These are the innovators and pioneers who’ve shaped dairy’s past and future.

So, wondering when you should visit the Shrine? Anytime, but those in the know say there’s no better time than during June. The National Dairy Shrine partners with the neighboring Hoard Historical Museum to celebrate June Dairy Month in style.

“We host a cow parade,” Opperman says. “All the major breeds of cattle are there. And there’s grilled cheese, ice cream, exhibits for the kids. It’s a great time.”

But beyond the festivities, Opperman hopes the museum sparks a broader appreciation for the people behind the dairy products many of you may take for granted.

“Our dairy producers work hard every day to bring safe, healthy products to the table,” Opperman says. “We just want people to understand and celebrate that.”
