“Respect for Law Day is considered both a tribute and an opportunity for the community to be together in appreciation,” Sauk County Sheriff Chip Meister explains. “Plus, it’s a great time to thank the brave men and women who continue to serve and help make us all stronger and safer every day.”
A focus of this year’s gathering included the addition of five first responders to the Courthouse “Wall of Honor” with more than 150 years of combined service among them. Their names join the more than 300 already etched on the memorial. The wall was dedicated in May 2001 by the Baraboo Optimist Club. The organization continues to partner closely with local public safety teams and supports this annual tribute.
A separate monument stands outside the Courthouse. It lists the names of those who have died in the line of duty. This includes Baraboo Police Officer Jeremiah Buckley, Sauk County Deputy James Jantz, Sauk County Sgt. Calvin Meeks, Sauk County Sgt. Stuart Searles, and Sauk County Deputy Richard Weinke. This outdoor memorial was built in 1986 by members of the Sauk County Law Enforcement Officers Association as a permanent testament to their sacrifice.
“Our community’s strength and safety rely on those who answer the call to serve,” Meister says. “This day is about ensuring we remember and honor that service—past and present.”
