Voters across Wisconsin head to the polls Tuesday to cast ballots for a number of statewide, regional and local races and referenda.
The most high-profile statewide race includes deciding the candidates for the next state superintendent for Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Three candidates competing to lead the state’s education department. Incumbent Jill Underly, Sauk Prairie Superintendent Jeff Wright and education consultant Brittany Kinser are competing to be the next state superintendent. The top two candidates will advance to the spring election.
Another statewide race this spring didn’t appear on Tuesday’s primary ballot. The Wisconsin Supreme Court has only two candidates – former state Attorney General and current Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Brad Schimel and Dane County Circuit Court Judge Susan Crawford – vying for Justice Ann Walsh Bradley’s seat. Schimel and Crawford will face off in the spring election and aren’t on Tuesday’s ballot.
In addition to the statewide races, there are a number of local primary races and school referenda to decide. Among the local races that voters must decide include narrowing the candidates for La Crosse mayor, Winnebago County executive, three seats on Madison’s Common Council and school board positions in Oshkosh, Appleton, Kaukauna, Little Chute, Menasha and Neenah.
While there are 94 school referendum questions on ballots later this spring, only five of them will be on the February primary ballot.
Polls close at 8 p.m.
The spring election is set for April 1.
