MILWAUKEE, Wis (Civic Media) — The Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) is facing a capacity crisis after receiving more than 100 dogs in the first week of January.
The shelter, at 3839 W. Burnham St., is now housing 225 dogs, pushing it beyond its limits.
MADACC, a government-funded shelter, is required to accept all strays, regardless of how much space they’ve got. To address the overcrowding, the organization is urgently seeking volunteers, adopters, and foster families.
People in Milwaukee County can participate in a five-day “test-drive” adoption program to determine if an animal is a good fit for their home. Adoption hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends, with no appointment necessary.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, though children aged 13-17 can participate if accompanied by a guardian. Those interested in helping can visit MADACC’s website for more information on volunteering, fostering, and adoption opportunities
