NEW MUNSTER, Wis. (WRJN) – The National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan has extended a flood warning for the Fox River Lower near New Munster, affecting Lake and Kenosha Counties, until early Thursday afternoon.
As of 4 a.m. Wednesday, the river stage was 11.4 feet, above the flood stage of 11 feet. Minor flooding is occurring and expected to continue.
The river is forecast to fall below flood stage Thursday morning and continue receding to 8.8 feet by Tuesday evening.
At 11.5 feet, water enters the yards of some homes in the Village of Salem Lakes and Town of Wheatland areas, including Riverside Drive and Shorewood Drive. Additionally, 3-4 inches of water covers 77th Street in the Town of Wheatland.
This crest is comparable to a previous high of 11.3 feet recorded on March 30, 2020.
Officials warn drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roads, as most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
