The road construction season is underway across the state, and you are probably noticing the orange cones and barrels are back, too.

A safety-focused “Slice of Wisconsin” takes us to Oshkosh, and Lakeside Plastics, the world’s leading manufacturer of orange traffic cones.

LISTEN: A quiz about orange traffic cones in this “Slice of Wisconsin”

The family-owned business has been around for years. And its main focus remains on safety products related to traffic and road construction.

Be aware of some main road projects during the holiday weekend

Northeast Wisconsin: You will be seeing many of those orange cones between Appleton and De Pere as the I-41 expansion project continues through 2030. You can find the most recent update on the project website here.

You should also expect delays and lane closures on state highway 172 across the Fox River from the Village of Hobart to the Austin Straubel Airport entrance. This is just outside of Green Bay.

North central Wisconsin: There is a large project underway on state highway 47 from the Outagamie county line north to state highway 29. Crews will be resurfacing the road, upgrading guardrails, and more. It’s expected to wrap-up by the end of summer.

Northwest Wisconsin: You will find ramp closures along US 53 in Chippewa County. Traffic is also being moved to the westbound side and a lane width restriction will be in effect around Lake Hallie.

Southwest Wisconsin: There are a number of bridge projects underway throughout Southwest Wisconsin. Find the latest updates and detours here.

Southeast Wisconsin: You’ll find a very active construction season underway, especially around Milwaukee. The Zoo interchange, and driver safety projects will be marked with orange cones and barrels. Look here for the latest.

A new study shows best, worst times to drive

Officials with AAA are estimating more than 816,000 Wisconsin residents will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend with the majority driving to their destination.

The software company INRIX recently analyzed the number of those behind the wheel in past years, and indicates the best times to hit the road on May 23 and 24 are before 11am and after 7pm.

The worst driving times are expected to be 12pm through 6pm and 12pm to 7pm this Thursday and Friday. It’s also suggested to avoid driving between 2pm and 5pm on Saturday.
