The Butternut MS girls basketball team opened their season on the road at South Shore on Friday. Both teams were very young and very scrappy. The teams played a 10 minute 5th/6th grade game, buckets were hard to come by as the Midgets won 4-0.
In the 8th grade game, that trend continued early on as the defenses made life tough. The Midgets led most of the game until South Shore went on a run late hitting a couple three’s late to take 22-18 lead with about a minute left. Butternut then went on their own run as Makinlee Hilgart hit a shot from the wing with 10 seconds left to tie the game and send it to overtime. In OT, Bailey Pritzl took over scoring 6 of her game high 16 and the Midgets pulled away for the 30-22 OT win.
Madi Palecek added 6, Hilgart and Kimmy Wagner each with 4 points.
Butternut will travel to Mellen on Monday and at Mercer on Tuesday before hosting LCO on Friday.
