The Butternut girls traveled to Prentice on Tuesday for the opening round of Regionals. The Midgets had been on a bit of a run, winning 8 or their last 10 games.
But against the Lady Buccs they struggled on offense early, and were outrebounded most of the night. Prentice slowly built a 19-10 halftime lead. They stretched that lead to 13 in the second half, before the Midgets started putting things together a bit.
Butternut cut the lead to six a couple times, but each time they got close it seemed Kali Heikkenen took control, grabbing what felt like every rebound. She led all scorers with 22. “We played good defense on her, but she got way too many rebounds”, commented Butternut coach Troy Scherwinski. Prentice held on down the stretch for a 44-35 win.
Butternut was led by Kendra Pritzl with 17 and Gianna Nahring with 11. Butternut finishes a good season with a 14-11 record. The young team will lose Seniors Kendra Pritzl and Isabelle Przybylski. “
Those two will leave some holes we need to fill on both ends of the floor, but we have a good young core to build around and a number of incoming players for next year. We should be proud of this season, and look forward to the future with a solid foundation that has developed these past two years.”
