Butternut hosted Chequamegon Friday for a good match up between young teams. Throw the records out the window each time they meet. The teams are very similar; young, scrappy defense, and struggle at times on offense. This one proved to be no different.
Addi Bablick opened the scoring hitting a three on the first shot of the game. Butternut methodically got defensive stops and slowly built a 17-7 lead late in the first half with some good ball movement and offensive rebounds, but the Eagles clawed their way back to trail 21-16 at half. They continued their run to start the second half and tie the game at 23.
Butternut regained the momentum to build another 10 point lead with Caitlynn Bebeau hitting a pair of threes. The Midgets held on from there with Gianna Nahring hitting 5 of 6 free throws and a break away lay up down the stretch to seal the 42-32 win for Butternut.
Nahring led the Midgets with 13 points and put together a solid game, also grabbing 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Caitlynn Bebeau finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Lizzie Pritzl had a nice game with 9 points, 8 rebounds and her normal physical defense. Kendra Pritzl was held to 6 points, but still grabbed 16 rebounds
Maddy Ernst and Jalen Brunell each scored 11 points for the Eagles.
Butternut improves to 4-4 and will have a busy week coming as they host South Shore on Tuesday at 5:45, Bowler on Thursday at 5:45 and then travel to Washburn on Friday.
