David Charles Hein, age 80, of Butternut died on Wednesday November 27, 2024, at his home. He was born on January 21, 1944, in Pontiac, Michigan, the son of Julius and Evelyn (Galbraith) Hein. David and his family moved to northern Wisconsin in 1946. After graduating Butternut High School, David joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. He served his country for 26 years including three tours in Vietnam and retired as an E9 Sergeant Major. David served as a squad leader and platoon sergeant while in Vietnam. Among many other medals and awards, he earned the Purple Heart, Good Conduct, National Defense, Vietnam Service, and Vietnam Campaign Medals. David had a great love of animals and his land. He was well known and well liked by the Butternut and surrounding communities and will be sadly missed.
He is survived by his brother Stanley (Darlene) Hein of Marshfield and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Robert and Julius “Bill” Hein.
A graveside service will be held at Nola Cemetery in Park Falls on Friday December 20, 2024, at 11:00am. Deacon Bob Schienebeck will officiate. Military honors will follow.
