Ludwig Frank Miller II, of Fredonia, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Lawlis Family Hospice in Mequon. He was 85 years old.
Ludwig was born on August 7, 1939, in Fifield Wisconsin to parents Anton “Anthony” and Anne (nee Hartl) Miller. He attended school in Fifield and graduated from Fifield High School in 1957. Lud, as he was known, graduated from UW-Stevens Point in 1961, with a bachelor’s degree in education and eventually a master’s degree in education from Roosevelt University. He attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island and then served in the Navy for 5 years. Lud was united in marriage to Ann Held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Slinger on July 11, 1964, and together they had five children.
After his naval service, he worked in education as a teacher, and then as a school principal in Wausaukee (Wis.) and Northern Ozaukee school districts. He then changed careers working in insurance and retired from CNA insurance as an auditor.
Lud was a lover of books, nature and “up north”. He was very proud of his small-town roots and enjoyed spending time with family, hunting, fishing or at the cabin. Nearly every year Lud attended the USS Pyro and USS Polk County reunions, reliving his Navy years with his fellow shipmates. He was a hunter safety instructor for 30 years as well as a proud charter member of the Fredonia Lions Club where he was a Melvin Jones Fellowship award recipient. He was also a member of the Fifield American Legion Post, and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Divine Savior Parish. Lud was also a very active volunteer at Divine Savior Parish. Lud’s faith kept him involved in various committees at church, the Schoenstatt Movement, and the local food pantries delivering food to local families.
Lud is survived by his four children: Mary Ellen (Robert) Bebermeyer, Tom (Rose) Miller, Tim (Pattie) Miller, and Anthony (Shannon) Miller. He is further survived by 13 grandchildren: Patrick (Gabrielle), Bebermeyer, Erin (Bryan) Staha, Claire, Kate and John Bebermeyer, Owen Miller, Loren (Owen) Campshure, Noah, Mallory, Matt, Natalie, Madelyn and George Miller, numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife Ann, daughter Karen Miller, infant granddaughter Mae Miller, and sister Diann Miller.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 5 PM, at Divine Savior Parish-Holy Cross Chapel, 5330 County Highway B, Belgium. A visitation will precede the Mass at Church from 3-5 PM. Father Don Thimm will preside over the Mass.
He will be laid to rest next to his wife at Forest Home Cemetery in Fifield, WI, on Saturday, September 14th at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials suggested to the Schoenstatt Fathers (W284 N698 Cherry Ln, Waukesha, WI 53188) or Divine Savior Parish, Fredonia (305 Fredonia Ave., Fredonia, WI 53021).
