Drummond Edges Butternut/Mercer Softball Squad

May 13, 2024 10:22 AM CDT

After mother nature wreaked havoc on last week’s schedule, the Butternut Mercer Pioneer softball team got a couple games in this past week.  On Tuesday, a short handed squad traveled to Ironwood to take on the Red Devils and fell 12-7.

Josie Wegner and Anna Schloer with doubles and RBI hits by newcomers Kaylee Schloer and Taylar Furtak.  Wegner and Jersey Polencheck combine for 11 strikeouts on the mound and the Pioneers ran wild on the bases with 11 steals in the contest.  “Ultimately, we had plenty of chances in the game but just couldn’t come up with that big hit.  We were missing 4 starters tonight and I thought the newer girls stepped in admirably to fill the open spots.  Kaylee made some great plays at first and Taylor hit the ball all game long” Coach Glenn Wegner

Friday night featured a conference matchup with the visiting Drummond Lumberjills.  Pitcher’s dual through the first 4 innings.  Jersey Polencheck for Butternut/Mercer and Ella Wald for Drummond with 9 K’s each with Drummond grabbing a run in the 3rd for a 1-0 advantage.  The Lumberjill offense gets going in the top of the 5th plating 5 runs and another 3 in the top of the 6th to push the lead to 9-0.  The Pioneers get going in the bottom of the 6th with hits by Lizzie Pritlz, Izzy Przybylski and Anna Schloer to score 3.  Drummond answers right back with 3 of their own in the top of the 7th and The Pioneers plate 1 in the bottom of the frame to close out the scoring.  Final score 12-4.  Polencheck goes the distance allowing 9 hits, 5 walks with 13 strikeouts.  “Jersey pitched a great game and was throwing hard all night.  They only had a few hard hit balls all game on her.  We struggled a little tonight against their bunting but overall, our defense played solid with only a couple miscues on the night.  We seemed a little rusty on offense as it took a while to get going.  We are about at full strength again and will regroup next week to finish strong”  Coach Glenn Wegner
