Mellen Softball Wins over Butternut/Mercer

The Butternut Mercer Pioneers traveled to Mellen on Monday night for a Northern Lights Conference matchup.  Mellen downs the Pioneers 11-1 in 5 innings.  Jersey Polencheck takes the loss on the mound going 4 complete, giving up 8 hits and 6 walks with 3 strikeouts.  Josie Wegner in relief goes 2/3 of an inning giving up 2 walks with a strikeout.  Mellen scratches an unearned run in the bottom of the 5th on a throwing error to end the game with a 10 run rule.  Polencheck with a double and Lizzie Pritzl with an RBI single.  “Defensively, we are improving but still too many miscues that extend innings.  Offensively, we hit some balls hard tonight but right at the defense.  Mellen played extremely sound defense and just shut us down and they also hit the ball well tonight”- Coach Glenn Wegner.  The Pioneers look to rebound and host Ironwood in a non conference matchup hosted in Mercer on Tuesday night.
